Método de Gramática e Tradução: trata-se de uma abordagem tradicional centrada na leitura e no estudo sistemático das regras linguísticas.
Neste método a instrução é feita na língua materna e a atividade principal é a tradução de textos, com ênfase na análise e descrição das estruturas.
Como a língua-alvo é pouco usada para comunicação oral, as práticas de fala e compreensão auditiva são mínimas, o que explica a frequência de baixa habilidade comunicativa entre alunos formados por esse método.
O professor atua explicando regras e corrigindo traduções; por isso não é imprescindível que ele seja fluente na língua alvo para aplicar a metodologia.
Historicamente, o método serviu para formar leitores de textos literários e acadêmicos, mas não para produzir usuários comunicativos da língua.
